Today, Circle announced that USDC and EURC are now available under the new EU laws for stablecoins, making it the first global stablecoin issuer to be compliant with MiCA. Starting July 1, Circle is natively issuing both USDC and EURC for European customers.
A major step for the digital financial system
Today’s announcement from Circle marks an important moment in the ongoing development of the financial system. One of the largest economies in the world has established clear regulations that make stablecoins legal electronic money, ushering in a new phase in the development of the crypto market as the main infrastructure for payments, finance, and commerce.
Circle – a pioneer in crypto regulations
Circle was the first crypto company to receive Electronic Money Transmission Licenses across the US, the first crypto company to receive a BitLicense in New York, and the first crypto company to receive an E-Money issuance license in the UK.
The progress and growth of USDC
In 2018, Ethereum technology made it possible to build a “protocol for dollars on the internet,” and in May 2018, USDC, a protocol for dollars, was launched. Working with payment regulators in the US, this innovation in electronic money was brought to public blockchains. With rapid market adoption (the birth of DeFi and the rapid growth of stablecoins on digital asset exchanges), this category began to grow exponentially.
MiCA and the future of stablecoins in Europe
Nearly 2 years ago, EU institutions reached an agreement on the MiCA regulations, which was approved by the European Parliament plenary last year. MiCA sets the most comprehensive regulations in the world for stablecoins and digital asset markets.
Today, Circle is authorized as an E-Money Issuer by the ACPR in France and as a MiCA-compliant E-Money Token issuer for USDC and EURC. Circle France is now the headquarters of our regulated financial activity in Europe, and European customers can directly access USDC and EURC through Circle Mint France.
The impact on the global and European digital asset markets
The global digital asset industry has struggled to understand the impact of MiCA, the world’s first comprehensive crypto regulatory regime. With USDC now available in the EU and compliant with MiCA, it is expected to become the dominant stablecoin in the region.
This represents a turning point in the development of the new financial system on the internet and a major step towards the widespread adoption of stablecoins in Europe and globally.
The future of stablecoins and the adoption of EURC
One of the most significant aspects of this moment is the almost certain growth and adoption of the Euro digital currency in the form of Euro stablecoins. By establishing a clear set of rules for the issuance and operation of the Euro digital currency, these new laws will stimulate a competitive market for Euro digital currencies, with banks and EMIs able to issue and utilize Euro stablecoins as a central part of their products and services.
Conclusion
On July 1, 2024, Circle marked a historic moment in the development of the digital financial system. With USDC and EURC compliant with MiCA, Europe has set a precedent for global crypto regulations. This is just the beginning of a new era where stablecoins become the foundation of global digital markets, facilitating safe, efficient, and compliant transactions on the blockchain.
